A router is a device that forwards packets of data between computer networks. Think of it as the post box that you drop your letters into or retrieve your post from! They perform the directing functions on the Internet. The data is sent on the internet and is essential for using email or web pages. With this article, you can turn a $60 Router into a $600 Router. We are in an age where we require a stable internet connection to keep our jobs. You can attend college and school classes and have entertainment. Everyone needs a strong and steady internet connection.

Precautions before upgrading and Tomato Firmware

The main difference between a $60 and $600 router is its signal allocation of bandwidth. You can do it on a $60 router by using Tomato firmware. Tomato boosts the signal and increases the quality of bandwidth allocation. It helps connect and network with other people in a secure manner. Before upgrading the firmware, we need to ensure that we use a modern router. Routers such as Linksys WRT54GL router or any other router from the WRT54GL series. Still, we have to check the model number to ensure that each router works similarly. Difference between Tomato and DD-WRT There is a lot of similarity between Tomato and DD-WRT, but I will use Tomato since it provides a better service and is easier to use. The DD-WRT and Tomato would still transform the router and improve its condition from the router we began with.

Upgrading to Tomato Firmware

If you have installed a cheap connection or any connection that would have the capability to be upgraded to Tomato. For this, you would need to install the latest version of Tomato and extract its content in a folder using 7zip. Now login into your router for upgrading. The procedure for upgrading the router depends individually on each router. If you have a lot of high-end work and use the tomato router, it is suggested to keep the router cool and give it proper rest in between to increase the router life. Overworking of the hardware tends to deteriorate the router quality and make it retire faster. Step 1: In the command prompt, type ipconfig/all, save subnet mask, two of the DNS addresses, and default gateway. Then manually set up the IP address on the desktop to 192.168.1.1, and you would require a set of 4 numbers. If you have an already pre-made username/password, you have to enter it. Step 2: Make sure that you are in the folder with the extracted version of Tomato. Next, in the firmware's upgrading section in the router's admin panel, click on the administration tab after the firmware upgraded charge. After this: Go to the browse option and guide the router to the correct firmware in the unzipped folder. Search for README in the Tomato_1_13 folder to find out the version you use at this time. If you are using the router mentioned earlier, choose WRT54G_WRT54GL.bin. You can turn a $60 Router into a $600 Router easily. After this, click upgrade.

Remember these points:

In admin, log in using the username and password. If you are upgrading from DD-WRT, this will not work. If you cannot log in, you hold down on the reset button on your router for a couple of seconds. To upgrade the router, you should log into the router, manually set the IP address to 192.168.1.1, and open the admin panel. Enter username/password if it has been created before. The $60 router is upgraded and ready to tackle high-end models of $600 and keep you in the game. With the emerging technologies, the day is not far, where everyone will enjoy a high-speed internet router with minimal cost. Congratulations, if you have followed the steps correctly, you are now using Tomato on your router, and you can now control many things. You can boost the Wi-Fi signal by using the advanced option on the Tomato sidebar. Tomato is a bit less effective than DD-WRT, but DD-WRT uses up to 70mW, which would be preferred by most users but causes a decrease in life expectancy of the router because of the heat problems it causes. *Be Warned*

Using Tomato Firmware, you can now

Block IP Addresses Set hours to operate Block websites and clear traffic Setup a wireless repeater Configure a VPN Boost Wi-Fi signal A $60 router is not enough in today's era as even homes are becoming smart, and they need internet connectivity to operate. Dollar 60 routers cannot provide the required specifications, thus requiring rooting and things; overloading the router is not the final solution but the best one for cheap end models. If you want to avoid the hassle of installing the firmware onto your router, then you can avoid all of this by sticking with your $60 router and use half the services provided by the $600 router. Here is a quick guide (https://routerlogin.one/192-168-1-3/) that lets you open the router panel and configure it to your heart's desire. However, most routers' $60 routers come with a gigabit of speed that is more than enough to cater to most people's needs. There are already multiple apps that help in most of the services provided that are subscription-based, for example, a VPN. The $600 router offers services that most people do not require and wastes money and time (if you upgrade the $60 router). If you live in a country like India, I am pretty sure that you are satisfied with the services provided to you for a very low price by Reliance Jio.
