Search engines are relied upon more and more for obtaining information. Since 1993, when the first search engine was launched online, many successful solutions have endured. Others have failed. Google is the dominant force behind online searches.

Website owners use SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to boost search ranking on the search engine websites for people to find them more easily.

The infographic below, courtesy to SEO Tribunal, highlights the stats that are used for website owners to optimise their website for the search engines. For example, in 2005, amongst other things, five critical features were introduced to Google’s search engine. They were “personalized search, sitemaps, Google Local, and XML.” These items helped website owners change their websites, so Google’s search engines could tell the difference and rank a site with good content and structure better than a poorly designed one. Up to 2011, much of the search engine industry was not following carefully the instructions Google offered to website owners in regards to optimization for better results. However, in 2011 Google implanted Panda. An algorithm that sorted out websites designed for advertising with very little meaningful content and sites that were designed for usability and business. This updated saw a shift in search results by 12%. More similar updates were rolled out later in 2012 (Penguin), and 2013 (Hummingbird). To have your website high on Google meant to apply what Google was considering valuable or your website would suffer penalties in the ranking results. With the growing usage of mobile devices, website owners wanting to keep up with the trend needed to keep up-to-date with the optimization of their mobile websites. This was required in 2015 when Google implemented another algorithm change called Mobilegeddon. This update boosted mobile-friendly websites in Google’s mobile search results. In this infographic, Google is mentioned the most. Because, the statistics show Google owns 92.59% of the market share for searches on mobile phones, and, 72.87% of the market share for searches on desktop computers. To give you an idea of how significant Google’s market share is, every second Google responds to 67,000 searches online.
