Private Vs. Public Social Media Accounts

What are the advantages of having a private social media account?

If you have Facebook, you’ll notice that specific posts can be set to “friends only” or “private” just for you. Having a private social media account allows you the ability to customize who can see your posts. If you have a Twitter account that’s private or has a “locked” symbol, you control who follows you and what content people can see. The same goes for Instagram, where people can’t see your posts unless they request to follow you if you have a private account. Private accounts are good for people that value their ability to keep things to themselves and want to make sure that what they put out there on social media is controlled. The advantage of having a private account is that you control what people see, making it an excellent option for many professionals. For example, if you have an employer and you don’t want to share your private life with them, you can make a private profile so that they aren’t able to see what you’re doing outside of work.

Why have a public social media account?

If you’re a member of the arts or media, having a public social media account is particularly important because you have more visibility, and more people can find you. They can see what you’re up to in your career, and it’s easier for new people to follow along and be aware of your accomplishments. If you have events that you post about - say that you’re a member of an improv group or you’re a musician, and you post your shows and events on your Facebook or Instagram page - more people can find them and attend these events. Having a public profile is advantageous for this reason because you’re able to invite people into your world. Even if you’re not a creator of any kind, a public profile makes it easier to make new friends on social media because it allows more people to find and engage with your posts.

Nothing is private on the internet

The reality is that as much as we’d like to have privacy, and as much as having a private account can be beneficial if that’s what you want, there are limitations to how private your information is when it comes to technology. You might have a private account and forget that there are people who follow you that you don’t talk to often. These are individuals who you're not close with, and you don't necessarily want to know bout your life. Unless you keep tabs on who is following your private account or who you’re friends with, you won’t retain the level of privacy that you’re envisioning. Note that word of mouth spreads fast, so someone who’s following you on your private account could tell people who don’t follow you about what you’re posting and what you’re doing. Having a private social media account can help limit who sees your stuff, but you only have a certain amount of control.

Talking about social media in therapy

Therapy is an excellent place to discuss concerns regarding your social media profile and gain an understanding of what the advantages and disadvantages of social media are. You can look up “counseling near me” and find a therapist in your local area, or you can discuss issues related to internet privacy with a therapist or counsellor online. Another thing to be mindful of is how your children use the internet. Creating private profiles for them can be essential and useful. Don’t be afraid to discuss any issues related to social media or technology in therapy, and use safe internet practices.
