The Internet of Things is Here. Are You Prepared For It?

It is no more a secret that the Internet of Things (IoT) is the next big thing in technology. Come 2022 and IoT will eventually connect millions or even billions of devices, homes, enterprises and entire cities that would interact with each other without human intervention. We’ve already started seeing it in our day to day life from wearables, smart cars, to home automation. In the next five years, the internet of things, IoT promises to make your life easier than ever before. Want to keep a tab on your hypertension? Wear this bracelet for a couple of weeks to track your health. Running out of milk, eggs or cheese? Let your refrigerator connect with your phone and send you a notification with a list of items that you need to buy as you are heading to the grocery store. Want to scare that annoying squirrel, which often comes and eats your bird food? Create a motion detecting squirrel detractor. All this will become possible with the help of the internet of things (IoT). On a macro level, cities will turn smart and gather data on traffic flows and employ big data to optimize traffic patterns and energy usage and consumption. Furthermore, the real big splash of IOT will be seen in business and industry. Business enterprises will be looking forward to gaining insight to reduce costs, increase productivity flow, and enter new markets by leveraging the full potential of the internet of things, IoT. With IOT fast catching up, Gartner is predicting that by 2020 there would be around 26 billion connected devices in use; however, others have forecast as many as 34 billion. Back in 2016, there were 3.9 billion connected devices and around 4.9 million connected devices were in use in 2015. In just one year, the number of connected devices jumped from millions to billions. From this, you can conclude that IoT is the next big thing in technology and will go far in the next 10-15 years. How Prepared Are You For IoT? Let’s figure it out..

Automation: Robotics will become more widespread with the internet of things, IoT. One of the major changes that we can expect to see in the upcoming years is that our lives become simpler and far more comfortable than now. Undoubtedly, in the IoT age, automation will reduce our laborious tasks. In other words, physically, we will have to labour less and we can devote more time to our primary occupations. Of course, we will have more time for relaxation, rejuvenation, rest, and vacations. Here are some examples to understand what life would be like in the next 5 years.

So, what can IoT do for you?

In the upcoming years, you can expect your PC to automatically order groceries when your stock falls below-set levels. If you have an automated robot at home, you can instruct it to unlock the door of your house when a visitor knocks, after verifying his/her identity. And, if you have both a robot and a PC at home, you can expect your robot to open the door when the delivery boy brings your grocery items. Not just this, you can also expect your robot to check all delivered items, send an electronic acknowledgement to the grocery store, thank the delivery boy, close the door once he leaves, and after that store the purchases at their correct places. Devices with in-built sensors like refrigerators can be expected to notify your PC that new stocks have arrived and then your PC will start updating stock balances automatically and will pay the outstanding amount to the grocery store by issuing an instruction to your bank/credit card account. All these things would happen seamlessly without the need for your being at home. Amazing, isn’t it? Moreover, your PC can also send a notification alert about maintenance needed on your car, refrigerator or oven and can even text or call the technician to fix an appointment. The best part is that if the technician’s identity information is already stored with your robot, you don’t even need to be at home when the technician calls. This simply means that when a technician pays a visit to your house, you can plan to do something else even if that means you will be away from home. Won’t it be a pleasant surprise when you wake up and find that your smartphone has sent birthday wishes to some of your close friends automatically even when you had forgotten and were asleep? This after returning tired and exhausted from office and going to sleep straight away for a long time! With the internet of things, the possibilities of automating mundane tasks are seemingly endless. Hope you find this post interesting and helpful.
